Pills by Pulchra Imago: What does the Devil have to do with the construction of the Milan Cathedral? In 1386, all of a sudden, the lord of Milan Gian Galeazzo Visconti decided he wanted to build a cathedral in Milan. Immediately he began to make arrangements with Archbishop Antonio da Saluzzo, and offered to donate his quarries in Candoglia, near Verbania, to the nascent Fabbrica del Duomo, from which the pink marble that characterizes the symbol of Milan is extracted. But why all this heat? The Devil is involved. A few days before Visconti threw himself into the construction of the Duomo, Satan had visited the lord of Milan, waking him up with the sound of clogs and the smell of sulfur. "I want to take your soul to hell. Unless you build a church full of images of the evil lord." Taken from Art and culture in Milan - Milanese legends.
The legend, very suggestive, wants to attribute to this the presence of 94 gargoyles, gargoyles with monstrous features typical of French Gothic, which characterize many European cathedrals. In reality they are pagan figures who in Christian churches took on the role of exorcising and removing Evil from the churches thanks to these monstrous looking guardians.
