pocket emptier plate measure cm. 24x18
Albertus Seba, f armacist, z oologist and c The collector of an incredible collection of naturalistic curiosities can be defined as the pioneer of those collections of exotic oddities, natural wonders, amazing bizarre, absolutely heterogeneous novelties that came from the most remote corners of the world and became a real passion for many wealthy collectors. It is said that every time a ship entered the port, Seba hastened to reach it to cure the sailors tried by the long voyage with his own remedies, thus being able to buy or obtain in exchange for cures, any natural specimen they had brought from the voyage. Animals, shells, insects, reptiles ... And since many specimens were difficult to preserve, the collections of drawings could replace or supplement the losses. The result was real "museums on paper", Seba's collection is portrayed in the work called Thesaurus. At that time, creating and owning a Chamber of Wonders or Cabinet of Curiosities was more than a collection of exhibits. A wunderkammer was above all a place for scientific study, a room in which to exhibit and debate, to create intellectual stimuli for new research. In 1716, Tsar Peter the Great bought the entire collection. The creation of the book Thesaurus meant that Seba's collection could become mobile and accessible to interested scientists, artists, intellectuals, even when the collection itself had long since been dispersed.
